Wilsons Promontory National Park - January 2011

The Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse from Bass Strait - I wonder if there is any walkers sleeping up there tonight?

Over the years I've walked all over Wilsons Promontory National Park, swam on most of it's pristine beaches and spent many nights sleeping on the ground in the many campsites scattered around the massive park. One thing I've never done is see it from the sea though. So I was quite excited on the last day of a cruise over and back from New Zealand to see the Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse hove into view late on our last day on the ship.

There wasn't a large crowd on deck to check out the prom tonight.

We sailed in between Rotondo Island (a Tasmanian Island) and the lighthouse before we appeared to sail north a little up the western side of Wilsons Promontory. Being just before sunset it meant that the huge granite outcrops that dot the waters around the prom looked at their best this afternoon. With our sail-by also corresponding with dinner time on the ship it meant that as usual on these cruises Sam and I didn't have many people up on the decks to share the great scenery with, sweet!

The ocean is dotted with those rugged granite islands around here.

Incidentally, I reckon the ships captain must of thrown the ship into first gear after our visit to Wilsons Promontory. It was 7am the next morning by the time our ship docked in Melbourne to finish of our New Zealand Cruise so you might say it was a leisurely end to our cruise (the prom is about 2.5 hours by road from the Melbourne CBD I'm thinking).

As I've already mentioned we sailed past Wilsons Promontory on a cruise ship, this was another Princess Cruise, actually it was out first Princess Cruise but we've done a few since then. Wilsons Promontory National Park is a real gem, one of the best in Australia I think. I am a little biased though as it's is the park that I call my backyard as it's only around 2 hours from home.
